Diabetic Foot Care
The amount of people diagnosed with type-2 diabetes increases each year with an alarming rate. This causes major concern for healthcare practitioners and, most importantly, for patients and family members.
As Orthotists and Prosthetists, we are very aware of the effects that diabetes could have on an individual. Mostly for us it means treating your feet with foot orthotics (innersoles) and, occasionally, replacing lost limbs (prosthetics).
Studies have found that those who have lost a lower limb due to the effects of diabetes are at great risk for losing their other within the following couple of years. I recon this could be due to the fact that there is an increased demand on the remaining limb. For this we strongly recommend the use of a custom moulded innersole to prevent harm to the foot and any pressure sores from developing. In fact, we recommend the use of innersoles for people with diabetes in general.
Also, there are wide varieties of footwear (socks and shoes) available for the diabetic foot that further aids in management that can be paired with custom innersoles for the best results. We would be happy to answer any questions and give guidance on foot care should you need it.
