Compression Therapy
Compression therapy is used to treat conditions involving venous and lymphatic insufficiency in the lower or upper limbs, including varicosities, lymphedema, venous eczema and ulceration, deep vein thrombosis and post-thrombotic syndrome. Graduated compression stockings are often prescribed and have the advantage of being more acceptable, relatively easier to put on and less cumbersome than bandaging and pneumatic devices.
These stockings exert the greatest degree of compression at the ankle, and the level of compression gradually decreases up the garment. Stockings can vary in the degree of compression depending on what condition the stocking is being used to treat. At Germishuys and Van Den Berg O&P we measure and fit the appropriate compression stocking for each individual.
Frequently Asked Questions
Compression stockings are designed to be tight, hence compression stocking. If your orthotist measured you prior to fitting and kept to those measurements when selecting a stocking, it should be fine. However, intolerance to compression is a contraindication for compression stockings. We never solve this by fitting a larger stocking but we instead chose the correct size garment in a lower compression class.
Some compression stockings are fine to sleep with but the majority of stockings are not safe for sleeping. It would be best to ask you Prosthetist during consultation.
